The University of Tennessee is seeking an outstanding leader for the position of Director of the Center for Transportation Research. The CTR began operations in 1972 and has contributed greatly to the overall success of the research program at the university. As a research center under the auspices of UT's College of Engineering, the CTR oversees various multidisciplinary programs associated with educational, research and training activities in the transportation field, including being the home of a national multi-university UTC (The Southeastern Transportation Center) It also interacts with the National Transportation Research Center (jointly operated by UT and Oak Ridge National Laboratory). The CTR currently oversees research/training/service activities with annual awards of approximately $9-12M/year, has a staff of approximately 60 members, and collaborates with faculty members across the campus and with its consortium members.

Applicants should have a proven record of leadership and management in transportation research and the demonstrated ability to build on existing relationships with state Departments of Transportation, the US Department of Transportation and other Federal agencies, such as, the Department of Energy, the Department of Defense, private foundations and industry. Candidates must be able to demonstrate success in implementing new initiatives in academia, government or industry. Executive experience and strong interpersonal skills, including collaboration with faculty and management of staff, within a research center or academic unit are essential to the success of the candidate.

The three main goals for the CTR are to conduct a program of research in transportation that is recognized for its excellence, comprehensiveness, innovation, productivity and national leadership; to develop and sustain the technical expertise for high quality transportation research by the faculty and students within the various departments and colleges of UT and to serve the transportation research, service and training needs of Federal, State and Local government, business and industry in Tennessee, the southeast region and the nation.

Minimum requirements: an earned doctoral or, in very special cases, appropriate terminal degree in the field of transportation engineering, planning, business management, or related discipline. Further, the successful candidate's record must demonstrate in depth knowledge of transportation research topics and potential sponsors. The candidate's record must also demonstrate ability to lead, and develop/implement a strategic vision for a transportation research organization.

Dependent on qualifications, the director may also be appointed as a faculty member with a tenure-track or tenured position in an appropriate academic department within the university.
