The CTR provides outlets for students and researchers to make valuable contributions to the future of transportation. The CTR is associated with the NTRC, the STC and the UT departments of civil and environmental engineering; marketing and logistics; and geography. Transportation research activity at UT and other universities is likely to expand. Studies indicate that between 2000 and 2025 the vehicle-miles of travel will increase by 68%. The CTR and its programs are prepared to anticipate the transportation needs that will accompany such growth.

The Southeastern Transportation Center (STC) is an umbrella program operating under the Center for Transportation Research at the University of Tennessee. It is the U.S. DOT University Transportation Center that represents the eight Region IV States: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Five of these states are home to the STC member institutions.

The STC is dedicated to training professionals to address the transportation needs of the region and nation. Dr. Stephen Richards, director of the Center for Transportation Research, serves as the STC director while DeAnna Flinchum assists Dr. Richards as the Co-director.

Not only is the STC dedicated to training professionals, it is attracting talented students into the transportation field while enhancing the efficiency of transportation in the future. The STC sponsors outstanding individuals to pursue graduate degrees at member institutions and has a major undergraduate degree program headquartered at North Carolina A&T University. The STC also sponsors outreach to high school juniors and seniors through its annual summer Transportation Week program at the National Transportation Research Center.
