Feature Profile: Chris Cherry
As a professor, Dr. Cherry’s courses, such as Transportation Engineering, Geometric Design, Transportation Policy and Economics, and Sustainable Transportation Systems, are not just academic exercises. They are designed to teach students and collaboratively contribute to transportation improvements that directly impact our communities now and in the future.
Current Projects include:
- The Center for Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety: as an Associate Director for the CPBS University Transportation Center.
- Identifying Research Priorities to Improve Safety for Pedestrians and Bicyclists Accessing Bus Stops
- Untangling the Growing Pedestrian Safety Problem on Urban Arterials
- How Much Pedestrian Harm Can We Attribute to Larger Vehicles in the Fleet?
- The Role of Urban Form, and Demographics, and Disadvantaged Communities in Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety
- Investigating safety and risk disparity between personally owned and shared micromobility modes.

Dr. Chris Cherry’s research interests are as diverse as they are impressive, spanning many topics. These include bicycle and pedestrian safety and system design, the impact of e-bikes, micromobility, and other emerging technologies on the transportation system, multimodal transportation planning and economics, travel behavior and demand, sustainable transportation, and transit security. He also leads the Light Electric Vehicle Education and Research (LEVER) Institute, a consortium of universities and industry, to explore the role of emerging and potentially disruptive classes of electric vehicles on transportation and sustainability.
