Advanced Mobility Innovation Lab

Bringing Transportation Engineering Skills to Children in Rural and Underserved Communities

The Advanced Mobility Innovation Lab (AMIL) program is dedicated to advancing STEM education and fostering innovation. Our mission is to develop the future transportation and engineering workforce by introducing students to real-world mobility technologies at an early age. AMIL aims to inspire the next generation through eye-catching demonstrations and project-based learning.

Our Impact/Who We Serve

The Advanced Mobility Innovation Lab (AMIL) focuses on expanding access to STEM education for students across East Tennessee, particularly in schools with limited access to advanced technology resources and career exposure opportunities.

Through hands-on demonstrations and interactive learning experiences, AMIL introduces middle school students to emerging transportation technologies and related career pathways.

AMIL’s long-term goal is to serve students across the East Tennessee Grand Division. To date, programming has reached students in Hamblen, Sevier, and Knox Counties, providing direct exposure to technologies such as electric vehicles, autonomous systems, and drones.

About Our Events

Drone Technology: students see drones in action and learn about their various uses in society.

Traffic Signal Technology: students learn about the technology behind traffic signals and how they keep us safe.

Electric Vehicles: students get to see various electric vehicles such as scooters, bicycles, go-karts, and cars in action.

Autonomous Vehicles: students get to see themselves from a LiDAR sensor’s point of view, then view a real autonomous Lincoln MKZ with cameras and sensors mounted around the outside.

Active Learning Pamphlet: All participants are guided by a provided questionnaire with STEM problems for each station.

Our team has been able to reach 255 students in a single event!

AMIL aims to reach 12 schools and 2500 students annually within five years. Want to bring AMIL to your school or event? Please connect with our team using the contact information provided at the bottom of this page.
